Why Hiring Is Not Volume. It Is Precision.

Why Hiring Is Not Volume. It Is Precision.

Recruitment is often discussed in numbers: applications received, candidates submitted, interviews arranged, vacancies filled and time to hire.

Those measures have their place. But after more than 15 years in recruitment, I have learned that the most important part of hiring cannot always be captured in a spreadsheet.

It is the ability to see beyond a polished CV.

It is understanding how someone thinks, communicates and responds when the work becomes complex. It is recognising capability that may not be expressed through the perfect title or the most conventional career path. It is also being honest when a candidate looks right on paper but is not right for the environment, expectations or responsibilities of the role.

This belief sits at the heart of why I founded PRIMA Recruitment & Consultancy.

PRIMA was created to offer a more personal, accountable and considered approach to recruitment. Every engagement is director-led, and every recommendation must be supported by a clear understanding of the person, the position and the environment in which they will be expected to deliver.

The following poem reflects what PRIMA does beneath the surface.

We Read Beyond What Is Written

We read beyond what is written. Not just titles, tools, and time in role, but how work holds under pressure, and how people carry responsibility.

Every CV tells a story. Most are polished. Few reflect how someone operates when delivery is on the line.

You bring ambition. We test for alignment. Capability, context, and judgement where it actually matters.

Because hiring is not volume. It is precision.

The difference between progress and delay, between risk managed and risk exposed.

In environments where governance matters and outcomes are visible, the right hire does more than fill a role.

They hold the line.

That is the work. Connecting capability to consequence. Placing people where they can deliver, and where it counts.

A CV Is the Beginning of the Conversation

A CV can tell us where someone has worked, the positions they have held and the technologies, systems or functions they have encountered.

What it cannot fully show is how they exercise judgement when the answer is unclear. It may not reveal whether they can build trust with a difficult stakeholder, communicate risk with confidence, recover a project under pressure or take responsibility when an outcome depends on them.

These qualities matter in every organisation. They become particularly important in government, technology and other high-accountability environments, where decisions are visible, governance is essential and the consequences of a poor appointment can extend far beyond an unfilled position.

This is why good recruitment requires curiosity. A recruiter must ask thoughtful questions, listen carefully and understand the context behind a candidate’s experience rather than relying on titles and keywords alone.

Capability Must Be Considered in Context

The strongest candidate is not necessarily the person with the longest CV or the greatest number of technical terms in their profile.

The right person must be able to apply their capability within the realities of the organisation. That includes its culture, pace, governance, stakeholders, risk environment and expectations.

Someone who succeeds in one setting may not automatically succeed in another. Equally, an outstanding candidate can be overlooked because their experience has been gained through a less conventional pathway or their value is not immediately visible through an automated search.

At PRIMA, we look for the connection between capability and context. We consider what the role genuinely requires, how success should be demonstrated and what conditions will allow the right person to perform at their best.

Recruitment Carries Responsibility

Recruitment is not simply the movement of CVs between candidates and employers.

Every recommendation affects a person, a team and an organisation. For a candidate, a new role can shape their confidence, financial security, family life and future career. For an employer, the right appointment can strengthen delivery, reduce risk and create momentum. The wrong appointment can produce delay, disruption and cost.

That responsibility should change how recruitment is approached.

It requires honesty with clients, even when the market feedback is difficult to hear. It requires respect for candidates, including those who are not selected. It requires transparency, sound judgement and the willingness to prioritise long-term fit over short-term activity.

Most importantly, it requires remembering that recruitment is about people, not transactions.

Precision Without Losing the Human Element

Precision in recruitment does not mean removing humanity from the process. It means combining a disciplined approach with genuine care.

It means defining the role clearly before approaching the market. It means assessing candidates consistently while remaining open to potential that may present differently. It means providing a focused shortlist supported by evidence, context and an honest explanation of why each person should be considered.

That is the standard I want PRIMA to represent.

We read beyond what is written because people are more than their CVs, and organisations need more than keywords. The objective is not to generate the greatest volume of activity. It is to create the right connection between capability, opportunity and outcome.

Because the right hire does more than fill a role.

They make progress possible.
